League City Wetlands
![]()
The Texas Parks &
Wildlife Department along with the city of League City received a grant from the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant
Program for wetland protection and restoration
efforts in the state. The Coastal Wetlands
Planning, Protection and Restoration Act established the National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant
Program to provide funds to states for wetland acquisition, protection, and
restoration projects. Funds are derived from federal excise taxes on the
sale of fishing equipment and motorboats and small engine fuels. These
funds will be used to acquire
approximately 146 acres of undeveloped streamside habitat habitat along Clear Creek in League City,
Galveston County. The area is one of the few remaining non-channeled stream
sections in the Houston area. It includes 21 acres of marsh, 35 acres of scrub
and shrub wetland and about six acres of prairie and forested wetlands. Plans
call for the area to function as a nature park with various low-impact
recreational and outdoor educational activities available to the public.
