Jumbile Cove Marsh Restoration

The Texas Coastal Program assisted the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department with the Jumbile Cove Project, which is located on the north shore of Galveston Island and adjacent to the City of Jamaica Beach.  The goal of this project is protect 35 acres of intertidal marsh, 18 acres of tidal flats, and restore ~15 acres of intertidal marsh. Approximately 15 acres of marsh will be restored by raising bay bottom elevations to levels which support intertidal marsh vegetation (Spartina alterniflora).  The vegetation provides habitat to a variety of finfish and shellfish which inhabitat the Bay and Gulf of Mexico , as well as provide detritus which is the base of the food chain.  Additionally, in 2003 colonial waterbirds successfully nested on the crowns of several bare mounds.
