Jarboe
Bayou-The City of
Clear
Lake
Shores
Project Description:
Clear
enhance the interpretive trails, and purchase vegetation for the wetland and
prairie restoration portions of the project.
In
recent years the restriction on removal of ground water and reduced extraction
of oil and natural gas, has virtually stopped subsidence.
Restoration of wetlands and marshes within this region of the coast are
succeeding in reestablishing natural marine estuaries and shoreline habitats.
The intertidal fringe grasses provide habitat for blue crab and shrimp,
along with menhaden and other species associated with the sport and commercial
fishing industry of this Gulf
Coast
region. Migratory and non-migratory
birds benefit from these habitats and provide opportunity for ecotourism and
education for the residents and visitors of this area.
In
addition to the marine habitat restoration, this project allows for the
preservation of a small, representative prairie habitat.
The visitors to the park will have a hands-on educational experience of
the prairies of the Western Gulf Coastal Plain. The parkland is located on the
north shore
of Jarboe Bayou
on the southeast corner of the island portion of the community.
The City of Clear Lake Shores has acquired two parcels of land and is
contributing right-of-ways abutting these tracts for the development of a park;
this endeavor is referred to as the Jarboe Bayou Restoration Project.
With this acquisition, the total parkland acreage for this city of 1,205
residents is 5 1/2 acres.
