Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program: Causeway Bird Island

Texas Coastal Program will provide funding to support the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program to protect an important bird rookery island in Nueces Bay, Texas from continued erosion and enhance fish and wildlife habitat values in a manner consistent with the needs of colonial waterbirds. The Program has been working in cooperation with the Texas General Land Office to restore and protect vital islands in the Nueces Bay area. Theses islands are important breeding sites for many colonial waterbirds including black skimmers, terns and others. A previous island restoration project has been successful and was immediately colonized by breeding waterbirds. The bird islands in the area have suffered significantly from erosion and are in need of protection, restoration or enhancement. The proposed project will continue the efforts to protect and enhance the bird islands in the region to provide more suitable nesting grounds and success. Specifically this proposal will protect/enhance the Causeway Island along IH-35 in Nueces Bay.
