By: Jackie Jacobson, Audubon National Wildlife Refuge
An oil painting of a wood duck has been chosen as the 2009 ‘Best of Show’ in the North Dakota Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Eighteen year old Thomas Dwyer from Bismarck, titled his winning artwork “King of the Lake”. Thomas takes art lessons from Margaret Swift at The Art Shack in Glenn Ullin, and has participated in the Junior Duck Stamp Contest for 9 years. Thomas’s artwork was selected from 551 entries received from across North Dakota.
Thomas is a senior at Shiloh Christian School where he participates in football, basketball, and baseball. Other hobbies include drawing and painting, reading, hunting, fishing, camping, and jet skiing on Lake Sakakawea.
In April 2009, Thomas’s artwork will compete at the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest along with other state and U.S. territory entries. The first place national winner, along with a parent/guardian, and the teacher, will receive a trip to Washington DC, a $5,000 cash award, and the honor of having their entry made into a stamp.
Alicia Rohde, a 17 year old student from Valley City received Best of Show runner-up honors. Alicia featured a colored pencil drawing of a pair of red-breasted mergansers, and is taught by Kelly Callahan, art instructor at Valley City High School.
The North Dakota Junior Duck Stamp Banquet and Awards Ceremony will be held for all first, second, and third place winners in Bismarck on May 2nd, in conjunction with the Lewis and Clark Wildlife Club banquet and auction.
