Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1932 to conserve habitat for waterfowl and other migratory birds. The Refuge encompasses 16,411 acres of land and is dominated by brackish and freshwater marsh. The Refuge includes a 27,000 acre Presidential Proclamation Area in Pamlico Sound where waterfowl hunting is prohibited.

Waterfowl hunting opportunities are available along the edge of the marshes around Juniper Bay and on Great Island, as indicated on the Refuge map. No hunting is allowed in the open waters of the Refuge located within the Presidential Proclamation Boundary. No other hunting opportunities are available on the Refuge.

Wildlife viewing and fishing opportunities are available at the Bell Island Pier and in the open waters adjacent to the Refuge marshes and islands.

Fishing and hunting seasons as well as bag limits are in accordance with statewide regulations. All Refuge lands are closed to public use from ½ hour after sunset to ½ hour before sunrise.
