The Delta Juvenile Fish Monitoring Program goals are to:

“Define the impacts of water development on the estuarine salmon population and to document the water quality requirements (including flow standards) needed to both sustain and enhance salmon production.”

Monitoring Data

All monitoring data are collected by STFWO and are available on this web page or by contacting the data manager directly at (209) 334-2968 ext. 322 or via the following e-mail address: Jonathan_Speegle@fws.gov. Please contact us if you need documents in other formats.

Some of the more common data requests have been compiled and placed in the table below, as well as the Chipps Island survival calculations. Please note these data are preliminary and are subject to revision and correction.

The beach seines and trawl tables list the POD species caught in STFWO sampling gears. The POD species are: Chinook salmon (CHN) Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, rainbow trout (RBT) Oncorhynchus mykiss, striped bass (STB) Morone saxatilis, threadfin shad (TFS) Dorosoma petenense, longfin smelt (LFS) Spirinchus thaleichthys, and Delta smelt (DSM) Hypomesus transpacificus.

Fork lengths that are listed as "0" are "plus counts". From each catch, only 30-50 of each species are measured and excess fish are plus counted.

Prior to 1985, sample dimensions used to calculate volumes were not recorded. Volume for trawls were calculated as (flow meter * net face area * flow meter correction value). Volume for seines were calculated as (net length * net width * net depth)/ 2. CPUE is calculated as (catch/volume) and is not provided.

Face Area of Chipps Island mid-water trawl net = 18.58 square meters, Mossdale and Sacramento Kodiak trawl nets = 12.54 square meters, Sacramento mid-water trawl net = 5.08 square meters. The correction value of the flow meters = 0.026873.

The results of our studies have been shared in various arenas: workshops, IEP newsletter articles, gray literature in the form of annual reports, testimony to the state water resources control board and peer-reviewed journal and symposium articles.
