Personal Property Number
Description
Unique five- or six-digit numeric code assigned by each Region's servicing Division of Contracting and General Services to each item of controlled personal property within that Region. Controlled personal property is defined as property with an original acquisition cost of $5,000 or more and sensitive property items (i.e., firearms and portable computers), regardless of dollar value.

Syntax
NNNNN, where each N indicates a number from 0 through 9. Five-digit personal property numbers are assigned by the Washington Office, Division of Contracting and General Services.

NNNNNN, where each N indicates a number from 0 through 9. The first digit of a six-digit personal property number identifies the Region responsible for acquiring the property item.

Values
The official values to be used for this data element will be provided in the Source. The procedures for classification of personal property numbers are described in the Reference. 
Source
An electronic file of the values to be used for this data element is not available at the present time.  However, the Service plans to provide user access to personal property information via the Facility Management Information System (FacMIS), which is currently under development. Service users will be able to access the Personal Property System and other facility-related databases, via FacMIS, on the Service Internal Internet or SII.

Use Instructions
As of the approval date, this data element will be used in any new automated system, data set, database, or information application, including new Geographic Information System (GIS) data and applications. This data element will also be used in any major modifications to existing systems or versions of these data-related items that use the unique five- or six-digit property numbers assigned by each Region's servicing Division of Contracting and General Services to items of controlled personal property with an original acquisition cost of $5,000 or more and sensitive property items (i.e., firearms and portable computers), regardless of dollar value.

To ensure compliance with the Service Information and Technology Architecture (SITA), Service staff are strongly encouraged to utilize this data element in existing systems, data sets, databases, and information applications. Where existing systems and data-related items are not in compliance, they should be modified to achieve compatibility and implement this data standard.
