Boating/Canoeing/Kayaking

Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge offers restricted boating/canoeing/kayaking opportunities at the Champion Lake Public Use Area. There may be additional areas opened as we acquire more land that has water access adjacent to parking availability.

Boats can be launched at the Champion Lake boat ramp, but you can only use a 10 hp or less motor. Larger boats can be used but you must use a trolling motor. All boats and trailers must have proper registrations and safety gear or you will be subject to a fine.

There are potentially dangerous water moccasins, alligators, or hidden stumps found throughout the lake. Bringing a compass or GPS unit is highly recommended as all the trees start to look alike in this 800-acre lake. Cell phones may not work in this area.

Since this is a wildlife refuge and our first priority is the preservation of wildlife, you MUST stay at least 200 yards away from active rookeries (large concentrations of nesting birds). Rookeries are generally active from March through early July.

Except for a portable toilet at Champion Lake, no other facilities are available.

Please leave the area cleaner than when you arrived.
