Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge hosts or takes part in numerous public events throughout the year. All events are free. To find the exact date, time and place, please go to U. S. March - Liberty Jubilee
In conjunction with the City of Liberty, the Refuge, along with the Friends of Trinity River Refuge, staff a booth during the Liberty Jubilee.  It is located around the courthouse square in downtown Liberty, TX on a Saturday in late March from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. The booth will dispense information about the Refuge, educational material for kids, and live animal displays.

April - Earth Day
The Refuge and Friends of Trinity River Refuge host activities at the Champion Lake Public Use Area for Earth Day (usually on the Saturday after April 22). Activities include canoeing, kayaking, boat tours, bird and butterfly viewing, walking the levee trail, and dip netting and fishing lessons in the lake for the kids.

June - Free Fishing Day
The Refuge and Friends of Trinity River Refuge host the annual "Free Family Fishing Day" on the first Saturday in June from 9:00am - 11:00am at the Champion Lake Public Use Area. It is the one day in the state of Texas that anyone can fish or crab without a license on public waters. We have fishing poles and bait for those who need it along with experienced fishermen who can help children with baiting hooks. All ages are invited.

September - National Public Lands Day
The Refuge and Friends of Trinity River Refuge host a trash cleanup day at the Hwy 105 Trinity River bridge on the last Saturday in September from 9:00am until 11:00am. The public cleanup event is part of a national effort for National Public Lands Day.

October - Big Sit
In conjunction with National Wildlife Refuge Week, the Refuge hosts a “Big Sit” event in early October. The rules could not be easier:  anyone with an interest can just sit in a 17-foot diameter circle and identify all the birds they see or hear during a 24-hour (or less) period. We start at 7:00 am at the Champion Lake pier and go to sunset.

October - Butterfly Count
In conjunction with National Wildlife Refuge Week and Butterfly Enthusiasts of Southeast Texas, the Refuge hosts an Annual Trinity River Butterfly Count in mid  October. Butterfly enthusiasts of all levels are welcome.

December – Christmas Bird Count
The Refuge hosts an Annual Trinity River Christmas Bird Count for northern Liberty County in late December. Birdwatchers of all levels are welcome.
