Hunting at Aransas NWR Complex

Rifle Hunter with Deer

The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge hosts annual Archery and Rifle Hunts for white-tailed deer and feral (wild) hogs. Applications are available during the summer months online, by mail (call us at 361-286-3559 with your mailing address) or you can come by the Visitor Center to pick one up. For 2007, they will automatically be sent to those hunters on our 2006 mailing list.

The 2006 Archery Hunt was held for nine days, September 30 - October 8, 2006. In order to reduce conflict between hunters in the 33,520 acre Archery Hunt Area, only 400 permits were issued on a first come, first served basis. The fee was $60 per hunter, for the 9-day hunt. See 2006 Archery Hunt results below.

The 2006 Rifle Hunt consists of four hunts on alternate weekends (Saturday and Sunday) of November 4 & 5 and 18 & 19, and December 2 & 3, and 16 & 17, 2006. For each of the 4 hunt weekends, a total of 100 permits were issued for the 19,496 acre Rifle Hunt Area. Each permit is valid only for the weekend specified. Permits for each weekend were issued on a first come, first served basis. The fee was $125 per hunter, for both days. Up to six names could be submitted on the permit application. Permit applications were available online and at the Refuge Visitor Center.

The Refuge also hosts two youth hunts, one on the Tatton Unit and a second on Matagorda Island NWR. These rifle hunts are for white-tailed deer and feral hogs and both are held around the last week in December and the first week in January. The Tatton Hunt is coodinated with our partner, Texas Parks and Wildlife Law Enforcement Division. For the Tatton Hunt, contact the Refuge at 361-286-3559. For the Matagorda Island Hunt, contact the Refuge or our partner, the Texas Wildlife Association for more information on the TX Youth Hunting Program.

Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) administers public hunts for white-tailed deer, feral hogs, mourning dove and waterfowl on Matagorda Island. For more information about recreational opportunities at the north end of the island, call the TPWD Bay City Office at 979-244-6804 or 979-244-7697.

For more information about Refuge Hunts, call the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge at (361) 286-3559 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily.
