Historical Sites of the Wichitas Tour

The Wichita Mountains will be conducting Historical Sites of the Wichitas Tours in March (check tour schedule for exact dates). Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis by telephoning the Visitor Center on specified reservation dates. Participants will be taken to various locations throughout the Refuge where guides will discuss the establishment of the Refuge, changes since its establishment, contributions by CCC and WPA programs, and the origin of the Refuge herds of American bison, elk, and the foundation herd of Texas longhorn cattle. The tour will be interspersed with two brief walks to visit historical sites. The majority of the program, however, is a bus tour of the Refuge. Guides for the tours are provided by the Association of Friends Of The Wichitas.

The tours will originate at the Visitor Center. Visitors may obtain a Refuge leaflet and map from one of the dispensers located at each of the five entrances.

Each tour will last approximately 2 1/2 hours. Due to the length of the tour, all children must be at least eight years of age to participate. There will be a $5.00 reservation fee per participant collected at the time of check-in. Reservations will be retained on the day of the tour until 10 minutes prior to tour departure. After that time, stand-bys will be accepted.

Interested persons are advised that the Refuge's public interpretive program is intended for individuals and family units. Only one family's reservation will be accepted per telephone call. We regret we cannot offer group tours but invite all interested individuals to call for reservations by telephoning the Visitor Center at (580) 429-2151. Wheelchair access is available if requested at time of reservation.
