Christmas Bird Count

108th CBC

Frank Chapman's proposal for the first "Christmas Bird Census" appeared in the December 1900 issue of Bird-Lore. On December 25, 1900, 27 birdwatchers heeded Chapman's suggestion, and their results were published in the February 1901 issue. Participation in the Christmas Bird Count has grown to over 1,800 separate counts, involving more than 50,000 observers.

The Christmas Bird Count at Washita is used to track winter bird populations. The count was initiated in 1971 and has been completed all but two years (1987 & 1990) since then.

The 108th CBC was conducted on December 21, 2007, and compiled by Brian Lockwood. Observers at Washita were: Brian Lockwood, Amber Ausmus, Levi Feltman, Jim Young, David Maple, Caroline Rhoads, Nancy Vicars, Brian Muzny, Patti Muzny, James Corbridge, M. G. Brown, Julie Henry, Jack Olsen, Lee Adkins, Brady Surber, Daryl Michael, Jr., and Robin Kelley. The weather conditions were as follows: temperature 40-65 degrees F, winds S at 5-10 mph, gusting to 20 mph.
