About the Refuge - Habitat

Of the Refuge's 20,800 acres, nearly half is water. Aquatic habitat on the refuge consists of deeper open-water reservoir, riverine, oxbow lakes, wooded sloughs, and seasonal and permanent wetlands.

The remaining habitat consists of agricultural lands farmed cooperatively, bottomland hardwoods, river bluffs and shrub-scrub grasslands.

Prescribed fire and water level manipulation, as well as mechanical techniques, are the primary management tools used to restore and maintain desired habitat on Sequoyah NWR.
