Festival Itinerary
Most of the festival events occur on the refuge, but many events are held off the refuge, either at the Byron Fish Hatchery Watchable Wildlife Area or the Great Salt Plains State Park. Download the map for direction information.

Family Movie Night - Join us at Cherokee's AEC Park to enjoy some family time while watching the Cherokee premier of "Over the Hedge". Bring your lawn chairs and/or blankets.

Concession Stand - The Waves of Hope Relay for Life team will be selling their baked goods & drinks during the Cherokee Family Movie Night at the AEC Park.

Early Bird Watching (3 hrs) Join Refuge staff on a birding tour of Salt Plains NWR. Meet at Refuge Headquarters - See last year's festival bird list!  

8:00 am

Bird Tour Enjoy an hour long tour of birding along the Great Salt Plains! Meet at Shelter #1 at the State Park.  
8am - 4pm
The Refuge Visitor's Center will be open all day. Come in and view our exhibits, grab a button with the 2010 Winning Artwork on it and learn about the importance of Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Byron Fish Hatchery Watchable Wildlife Area - Visit the nature center for hands-on fun for the entire family. Each family can build their own bluebird nestbox to take home with them!  
9:00 am
Wildlife Photography Session with renowned wildlife photographer Duane Angles. Enjoy a presentation about photographing these secretive subjects. Workshop participants will have classroom/field time.  
9am - 1pm
Crystal Digging Contest- Back by popular demand! The digging contest will be located at the Salt Flats Dig Area. Registration begins at 9AM. Prizes will be awarded in 2 categories of Best, Largest, Smallest Hourglass Blade and Crystal Cluster. Shovels for rent on site.  

9am - 2pm

Concession Stand- Smok Shak's Relay for Life Team will be on hand at the Salt Fltas during the digging contest with goodies for sale! Support Relay for Life Today!

Native Plant Walk - Join local botanist Dr. Paul Nighswonger at the refuge to learn about the flora and fauna of Salt Plains. Meet at the refuge headquarters.  
12:00 pm
Jet Museum OPEN - Stop by the Jet Museum to learn about some of the unique history of Alfalfa County. Open until 5 pm.

Zoomobile Program - Join Oklahoma City Zoo staff at the refuge! Featuring LIVE, native animals from all over Oklahoma!

Awards Ceremony - Join us out at the Salt Flats Dig Area to view the winning selenite crystals for the Crystal Contest 2010!

Antique Tractor Pull - Come and see the tractors of yester-year at the State Park! Call the Great Salt Plains State Park at (580) 626-4731 for entry information.

Eagle Roost Nature Trail Guided Tour - Explore the trail and marvel in natures mysteries! Meet at trail parking lot.

Live Music - Enjoy the acoustic good ol'boy country music of Mike Warehime. Feel free to dance!

Reptile Rehabilitation - Tandy Keenan, a biologist and reptile rehabilitator from Texas County, will talk about working with reptiles. Tandy will also demonstrate techniques to identify venomous snakes and spiders. Adults and kids, alike, will enjoy learning about these misunderstood creatures.

Duck Identification Demonstration - Biologist Jeff Neal shows the tricks behind identifying ducks by wings - Test your skills with a fun, interactive Wing-ID game!

Tomahawk & Atlatl Demonstration - Try your hand at primitive spear tossing, stick-tossing, and tomahawk tossing*. (*Must be at least 5 ft. tall)

Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation brings you the opportunity to test your shooting skills at clay targets. Trap Shoot

FireWise Prescribed Burning- Wichita Mtns. Fire Crew will be here to talk about the benefits of prescription burns for wildlife and how you can be FireWise.

Fire Shoot-Out - Join the Nescatunga Volunteer Fire Department to "put out" fires and learn about fire safety.

8th Annual Youth Art Contest - View the winning artwork at the refuge headquarters! Get a souvenir button from the festival with the winning artwork of your choice! View all entries at refuge headquarters.

Youth Archery Contest - Sponsored by the Enid Archery Club, all youth to 18 yrs old are eligible. Bows will be available to use.

Youth Casting Contest - Sponsored by the Byron State Fish Hatchery - Contestants can bring their own pole or the refuge will provide a pole for them to use. Open to all youth under the age of 18. All equipment provided by refuge. Meet at the Bonham Pond.

Wildlife ID - Test your skills at tracking wildlife and make your own animal track to take home!

Skins & Skulls - Ever wonder how many teeth a bobcat has? Or what a raccoon's hide feels like? Come see the different wildlife found in Oklahoma!

Migration Headaches - Head to the Eagle Roost Nature Trail for a fun filled, self-guided game on the "headaches" birds experience during migration.

Relics of Oklahoma - Plains Indian & Pioneer Museum

Edible Wetlands - Learn about the importance of wetland conservation and create your own edible wetland to enjoy!

"Bats! Bats! Bats!" - Tandy Keenan, Naturalist from Alabaster Caverns State Park, will present an interactive program on the winged mammal - the bat.

Campfire Program - Join us in a family fun campfire program! Don't forget to bring your chair, marshmallows, and roasting stick. Meet at Shelter #1, State Park.

"The Prairie Under Cover of Darkness" - Participate in a guided night walk along the Watchable Wildlife trail. (Please dress warmly!) (1 1/2 hours).
