The first refuge dedicated for big game animals was Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge was founded in 1905. Subsequently in 1908, the National Bison Range in Montana and in 1912, the National Elk Refuge in Wyoming were also established for the protected future of big game.
