Welcome to San Andres National Wildlife Refuge! The Refuge is 57,215 acres of rugged Chihuahuan desert mountains and canyons. The Refuge is located about 30 miles northeast of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Our web site contains information regarding management of the Refuge, educational research, habitat improvement projects; and photographs of Refuge wildlife, plants, and scenery.

The first wildlife refuge was established by President Theodore Roosevelt at Pelican Island, Florida, in 1903 to protect egrets, herons, and other birds that were being killed to provide feathers for the fashion industry.
