Projects
funded by the Middle Rio Grande Bosque Initiative (MRGBI)
are funded on the basis of applicability to the following
four categories: Research,
Monitoring, Habitat
Enhancement, and Outreach.
A single project may consist of components of each of these
categories. However, listings of projects on maps and in tables
are grouped according to the primary project category.
Projects
funded by MRGBI are sponsored by a diversity of participants.

Projects
in this category consist primarily of original research studies
focused on the ecological processes and biotic communities
that characterize the Middle Rio Grande ecosystem. Research
may be carried out by academic institutions, federal and state
agencies, or non-profit organizations. Studies may cover a
wide variety of topics and span spatial scales ranging from
site-specific to basin-wide areas of emphasis.
Projects in this category are comprised
of coordinated programs to monitor the biological quality
and ecosystem integrity of the Middle Rio Grande ecosystem.
Programs that focus on biological quality emphasize the diversity
and abundance of native and endangered species. Programs that
focus on ecosystem integrity emphasize the functional connection
between the river and the bosque.
Projects in this category are characterized
by one or more of the following foci:

Projects in this category focus on education,
skills training, and the communication. Educational projects
may target students in elementary schools, high schools, or
public citizens. Educational projects may entail the development
of curricula, internships, natural history and ecology classes,
and community or research projects done by students. Students
participating in these projects gain valuable skills, such as
learning how to work in a variety of organizational environments
or learning how to design and perform research experiments.
Communication-based projects seek to increase the sharing of
existing information about the Middle Rio Grande ecosystem across
populations, be they state and federal agencies, academic institutions,
non-profit organizations, or interested citizens.
