Background: The southwestern willow flycatcher (Empidonax traillii extimus) is a federally listed endangered species. By determining population numbers, preferred nesting, feeding, and mating habitat, Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) staff will be able to restore these declining habitats and preserve already existing ones.

Scope: Trained technicians will conduct all surveys using U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey protocol.

Benefits: This project will result in a coordinated monitoring program to assess the population numbers and ecological requirements of the southwestern willow flycatcher. It is hoped that the monitoring program will result in improved management of the endangered species of bird by Refuge staff. Knowledge and improved management techniques gained by Refuge staff may also be transferred to other natural resource managers in the Middle Rio Grande Valley and elsewhere.
