The Junior Duck design contest is part of a nationwide curriculum developed for K-12 schools by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to teach environmental science and habitat conservation. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service accepts entries of original artwork of North American ducks, geese or swans for the Federal Junior Duck Stamp contest. The top winner in each state advances to the national competition.
The Junior Duck Stamp is modeled after the Federal Duck Stamp, which has been sold since 1934 to raise money to protect wetlands and waterfowl habitat. Funds raised from the sale of duck stamps have been used to purchase lands for inclusion in the National Wildlife Refuge system.
The art contest is designed to fit within existing art and science curricula and incorporate scientific and wildlife management principles, crossing ethnic, social, cultural and geographic barriers to teach a greater awareness of our nation’s natural resources. The program concentrates on waterfowl and wetlands to give students and opportunity to experience the beauty and diversity of wildlife while discovering the interdependence found in nature.
