Conserving the Nature of America

Royal Terns on Sundown Island, Matagorda Bay

Approximately 180,000 pairs of colonial-nesting waterbirds belonging to 27 species annually nest on 130 colony sites along the Texas coast. They are excellent indicators of the health of our estuaries and encourage thousands of ecotourists to visit the state and support tourism. Their diversity and abundance has been noted since the days of John James Audubon in the early 1800’s.

Clear Lake Field Office (CLFO) biologists, along with other state and federal biologists, Aubudon Society members, and volunteer groups, annually census the coastal colonies.

The CLFO office houses and maintains the Texas Colonial Waterbird Society database(1973 – present), which includes colony site locations and population estimates, through the Texas Coastal Program
