Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1973 to maintain natural ecological processes and to preserve and enhance native wildlife habitat.  Refuge goals are to protect and mange endangered species and to preserve, restore, and maintain biological diversity as it occurred historically.  Portions of the refuge are set aside for scientific research that is compatible with refuge goals, and the refuge is designated as a Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site in partnership with the University of New Mexico.

To apply for a research permit, complete and submit the attached research permit application.  New applicants are required to discuss proposed research projects with the Refuge Operations Specialist before submitting an application.  Applications are reviewed by committee to determine if the research project is compatible with U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service regulations and goals, compatible with Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge regulations, goals, and management directives, and not a duplication of past or current research on the refuge.
