Diverse Wildlife Internships (2)
Location: Central Arkansas Refuges, Augusta , Arkansas
Description: Cache River is a 62,000-acre refuge located in northeast Arkansas and features some of the largest remaining tracts of bottomland hardwood forest within the Mississippi Alluvial Valley. This unique refuge provides critical habitat for waterfowl and other migratory and resident wildlife species. The refuge is characterized by extensive forested flats, shallow sloughs, meandering channels, lakes, and other wetlands, reforested lands, and farmed sanctuaries. There are three other refuges in the complex; Bald Knob, Wapanocca, and Big Lake, and interns may have short-term assignments at these refuges as well.
Interns will be involved in wildlife management, forestry, and maintenance; duties will be shared. Work hours are variable (usually 7:30 to 4:00, Monday through Friday) and will average around 40 per week.
Major projects:
Assist refuge biologist with multiple wildlife surveys such as: bear hair snares; shorebird surveys; baiting, capturing (use of rocket nets), aging, sexing and banding of wood ducks; monitoring of moist-soil impoundments through moist-soil seed estimation and plant identification, entering data into GPS and GIS ; and other duties related to wildlife management.
Assist refuge forester with herbicide control of kudzu and other invasive exotic plants, collection of forest habitat inventory data, removal of beaver dam impoundments with high explosives, and other duties related to forest habitat management.
Assist refuge staff with boundary posting, vehicle and grounds maintenance, and other diverse duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Applicants must be pursuing or recent graduate with a degree in wildlife biology, forestry, ecology, zoology, or environmental studies.
Experience in conducting forest inventory and/or vegetation sampling preferred.
Knowledge of general wildlife management techniques.
Must be able to work out-doors withstanding hot temperatures and insects.
Desire to work and learn on the job.
Duration: Approximately 12 weeks, but can be extended. Internships usually start in early or mid May and last through mid August.
Benefits: weekly stipend of $125 and housing will be provided, personal vehicle preferred but not required.
