WHY:

  • To dedicate and re-name the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge to the Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Honor Senator Hollings and his conservation legacy.

BACKGROUND:

The ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1990, is part of an overall ACE Basin habitat protection and enhancement plan implemented by a coalition consisting of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Ducks Unlimited, The Nature Conservancy, Low County Open Trust, Westvaco Corporation, and private landowners of the ACE Basin. Senator Hollings was instrumental in securing more than $37 million alone for South Carolina's National Wildlife Refuges including the appropriations to establish the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge. Of the $37 million, $14 million was for land acquisition and construction of conservation-related facilities at the ACE Basin NWR. Presently at 11,815 acres, the Refuge may encompass 19,500 acres upon completion of additional purchases. Long known for its tremendous diversity, the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge supports a vast array of wildlife and offers opportunities for hunting, fishing, wildlife observation and photography, and environmental education.
