A very special celebration takes place this year . . . the 100th birthday of our National Wildlife System.

On March 14, 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt established Pelican Island, Florida, as the first refuge to stop thousands of birds from being killed for their feathers.

Today, 540 refuges with 95 million acres protect wildlife and their habitat.

Celebrate by visiting a refuge or learning more about this priceless legacy at http://www.fws.gov.
