The
Sheldon and Hart Mountain Refuges are remote and expansive jewels of high-desert
habitat, set aside in the 1930s for the conservation of pronghorn antelope.
Thirty years later, a centralized administrative office for the two refuges
was established in Lakeview, Oregon to meet the increasing demands of
managing these habitats and the need for basic commercial services and
amenities. Today, refuge maintenance staff and field biologists remain
at remote stations on the refuges while administration, outreach, biological
investigations, and fire management services are provided from Lakeview.
