Sat. 10-12 Ages 8 to 12 come explore the wild and interesting things that live in the Francis Marion National Forest and Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. July 19 Lowcountry Folk Remedies & Pharmacology: A History,
Sat. 2PM Dr. Richard Porcher
Dr. Richard Porcher will tell the story of the use and study of folk remedies through the experiences of Native Americans, African slaves, Dr. Francis Porcher and Dr. Julia Morton. Dr. Richard Porcher is a lifelong student and educator of the natural history, native flora, and culture of South Carolina. His talks reflect his keen interest in the Lowcountry and always prove to be informative and inspiring. Free Program
July 26 Gifts of the Forest and Refuge, Sweet Grass Baskets
Sat. 2PM Vera Manigault will demonstrate basket sewing, a traditional
skill that uses native materials and dates to the African slave labor on rice
plantations. This cottage industry is now recognized as an art form. Vera has patterned the use of natural dying agents to color the sweet grass, adding color to the baskets and other items she sews. These unique baskets will be offered for sale. Free Program
