Fire Management

San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex manages fire to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants, and their habitats while protecting its facilities and surrounding communities.  Fire management is integrated into the Refuge’s land management program.
The fire management program includes hazardous fuels reduction, wildfire management, and wildfire prevention.  This involves technical expertise in firefighting, an understanding of fire ecology, and interaction with the public.  Wildland fire management involves multiple objectives and dynamic strategies, depending upon conditions and resource objectives outlined in the Refuge’s fire management plan.

A primary goal of the Refuge’s fire management program is to reduce wildfire risks to the Refuge, its wildlife and habitats, and adjacent land owners.  In the wildland-urban interface, the zone where structures and other human developments meet or intermingle with undeveloped wildland or vegetative fuels, the Refuge implements hazardous fuel reduction projects including construction and maintenance of fuel breaks, invasive species removal, and a residential chipping program.

The Refuge’s fire management staff includes a Fire Management Officer (FMO), Assistant FMO, and two fully-staffed fire engines.  In addition to responding to fires on and near the Refuge, most staff also assists other local, State, and Federal agencies in California and even other parts of the United States as necessary.  The fire staff is also trained to respond to other types of disasters including oil spills, hurricanes, and floods.
