Riparian Brush Rabbits
"Riparian" means "by a river."
"Brush" means lots of bushes close to each other, like the bristles on your hair brush.
So these rabbits live in dense bushes by rivers. When the rivers flood, these rabbits can climb trees to escape!
The rabbits are 10 to 13 inches long. They weigh 1 to 2 pounds when grown.
They live in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Can you find the valley on this map?
Riparian brush rabbits almost died out in the wild. Many of the good places to live are gone.
So we caught some of the bunnies. We put them in big safe pens to have babies. Now we are letting them go in the wild.
Hawks, owls, foxes and other animals naturally catch bunnies. But house cats and dogs do too. Keep your cat inside. Make sure your dog doesn't hurt wild animals like bunnies.
