CLASSIFICATION: Federal Endangered Species (Federal Register 44:61911 (pdf); October 26, 1979) CRITICAL HABITAT: None designated. RECOVERY PLAN: Recovery Plan for Coastal Plants of the Northern San Francisco Peninsula 2003 DESCRIPTION: Presidio manzanita (Arctostaphylos hookeri ssp. ravenii), also known as Raven's manzanita, is a low, woody shrub in the heath family (Ericaceae). It grows 1/2 to 2 feet tall, sometimes semi-erect or tending to prostate in youth. The brachlets, petioles and rachis have tiny hairs. Sharply pointed leaves are slick and glossy with stomata on both surfaces. Tiny (1/4 inch) spherical white flowers appear in February and March. The berry is tan-brown at maturity. See Hickman (1993) in General Information about California Plants, below, for a detailed description of the species. DISTRIBUTION: Historically known from scattered sites on serpentine or related soils on the San Francisco Peninsula from Fort Point in the north to Mount Davidson in the south. Of the historic sites, only one, supporting only one plant, occurs within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Cuttings from this plant have been propagated in the vicinity. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: This species was listed as endangered by the California Department of Fish and Game in November 1978. The California Native Plant Society has placed it on List 1B (rare or endangered throughout its range). REFERENCES FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Raven, P. H. 1952.
