Consultation & Technical Assistance
People, agencies and other entities who may impact protected species or habitat need to contact us before taking action.
Four branches of our office do endangered species consultation and technical assistance. These four geographic branches are Sacramento Valley, San Joaquin Valley, Coast-Bay-Delta and Forest-Foothills.
We serve the Central Valley, San Francisco Bay, Lassen and western Sierra areas of California. See more information about our jurisdiction.

The Red Bluff Fish & Wildlife Office also does certain kinds of consultations in the northern Sacramento Valley (see below).
San Joaquin Valley Branch (916) 414-6630
Service Area:
- San Joaquin/Tulare Valley floor up to 1500' in Stanislaus, Merced, San Joaquin, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Madera, Fresno, Tulare, Kings and Kern Counties.
- Valley floor species, e.g. kit fox, in eastern Contra Costa and Alameda counties.
- The Carrizo Plain in San Luis Obispo County.
- Fish-related projects in the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta are handled by the Coast Bay Delta Branch.
Sacramento Valley Branch (916) 414-6645
Service Area:
- Sacramento Valley floor up to 1500' in Shasta, Tehama, Glenn, Butte, Colusa, Sutter, Yuba, El Dorado, Placer, Nevada, Yolo and Sacramento Counties, and in the Sacramento River basin of Siskiyou County.
- Valley elderberry longhorn beetle projects in Lake, Napa and Solano counties.
- The Red Bluff Fish & Wildlife Office handles endangered species consultation related to Northwest Forest Plan implementation.
Forest-Foothills Branch (916) 414-6556
Service Area:
- Plumas, Lassen, Sierra and Alpine Counties, and Mono County north of Mono Lake.
- Cascade/Western Sierra foothill and mountain areas above 1500' in Shasta, Tehama, Butte, Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Madera, Fresno, Tulare and Kern Counties.
- The coast ranges above 1500'.
- Some projects in the Tahoe area and Mono County are handled by the Nevada Fish & Wildlife Office in Reno.

Coast-Bay-Delta Branch (916) 414-6625
Service Area:
- Napa, Sonoma, Marin, Lake, Solano, San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara Counties.
- The Russian River basin of Mendocino County, except for forest projects, which are handled by Forest-Foothills.
- Fish-related projects in the Sacramento/San Joaquin River Delta.
- Coast range areas above 1500' are covered by the Forest-Foothills Branch.
- Valley elderberry longhorn beetle issues in Lake, Napa and Solano counties are handled by the Sacramento Valley Branch.
- Valley floor species in eastern Contra Costa and Alameda counties are assigned to the San Joaquin Valley Branch.
- The Arcata Fish & Wildlife Office handles most projects in Mendocino County outside the Russian River basin.
Red Bluff Fish & Wildlife Office (530) 527-3043
This independent office handles endangered species consultation and Northwest Forest Plan & National Fire Plan implementation with the Shasta-Trinity, Mendocino and Lassen National Forests, the BLM Redding Resource Area and the National Park Service Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. It is a separate office, not a branch of the Sacramento office.
