Anadromous & Marine Fishes

The NOAA Fisheries Service administers the Endangered Species Act for Anadromous and other fishes that live in the ocean. (Anadromous fishes spend most of their lives in the ocean but spawn in fresh water.)

We have some species accounts for 4th, 5th and 6th grade students, including:

Longfin Smelt

In 1993, we were petitioned to list the longfin smelt under the Endangered Species Act. We made a positive 90-day finding (PDF). However, our full 12-month finding (PDF) was that listing was not warranted.

On Aug. 8, 2007 we were petitioned to list only the San Francisco Bay-Delta population of longfin smelt as a Distinct Population Segment (DPS). On May 6, 2008 we published a 90-day finding that listing might be warranted.

On April 9, 2009 our full 12-month finding determined that it not qualify as a DPS. We also announced a new status review of the species through its entire range. News Release. Federal Register notice TEXT | PDF (68 KB).
