Photo Black Tail JackriabbitRabbits (Lagomorpha) are swift, burrowing mammals characterized by soft fur, long ears and a stubby tail. They are smaller that hares and are born blind, naked and helpless. Jackrabbits or hares are larger and are born with their eyes wide open, some fur already and can move around within a few days of birth.

There are two rabbits and one hare on the Rufuge:

  • Eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus)
  • Desert cottontail (Sylvilagus audubonii)
  • Black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus)
