BISON PILOT AREA

Beginning in January, 2007 the Refuge staff began construction of a bison fence. The completed fenced, 1400 acre area of the Refuge provides the needed habitat for the bison.

As of September 2008, there are five calves in the bison herd. The Refuge is now home to 24 bison, the first time in more than a century that a wild bison herd will roam the short grass prairie just outside of Denver.

Arriving from the National Bison Range in Montana, these bison were chosen because their genetics show no domestic-cow DNA. The bison were unloaded from the transport truck Saturday, March 17, 2007 while invited dignitaries, special guests and news media watched. WATCH THE VIDEO OF THIS EVENT.
