INVASIVE SPECIES ~ FIELD BINDWEED Convolvulus arvensis

Field bindweed is a perennial.

  • Extensive root system and stems prostrate up to four feet long, often twinning.
  • Leaves are alternate arrow shaped with two inch blades.
  • Inflorescence (flowering part of the plant) is white or pinkish, bell or trumpet shaped flowers with two small bracts located one inch under the ovary.
  • Fruit is a rounded capsule with four blackish-brown seeds that are often flattened on the sides and can be viable up to 50 years.
  • Most times the root system can penetrate the soil at a depth of 20 feet deep.

Field bindweed is originally from Europe and may have been first introduced in wheat from Turkey in 1870.
