The Fish and Wildlife Service at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, in conjunction with Tri-County Health Department, trapped 4,574 mosquitoes in 2004. Of those trapped, 821 were tested for West Nile Virus (WNV) as part of the Arsenal’s mosquito monitoring program.

Mosquitoes selected for testing were those species known to transmit WNV to humans. Traps were set near the visitor center and at perimeter locations adjacent to Commerce City, Montebello and 96th Avenue.

Results from the 821 mosquitoes tested throughout the summer were all negative for WNV. In addition to trapping, dip counts and larval control were performed on standing bodies of water to evaluate and reduce overall numbers of mosquitoes on the Refuge.

2005 Information Update

West Nile virus claimed more deaths in 2005 than ever before.
Scientists at the Center for Disease Control say that West Nile,
transmitted mainly via mosquitoes, has claimed more lives than last year
due to a longer mosquito season.
West Nile virus is here to stay, the CDC says.
