Cultural resources are inventoried at RMA according to the legal requirements contained in the National Historic Preservation Act and the regualtions issued by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation for the protection of historic properties.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

Native Americans Were On The Land First

The land at the Refuge was first occupied by Native. Americans during the Paleoindian period (7,800 years ago).

 

Many Homesteads Covered The Area Now Called The Refuge

Euro-Americans established farms in the area after the 1870's.

Arsenal Begins During World War II
In 1942 the U.S. Army used the land for chemical weapons production.


Shell Oil Company

After the war, private companies used the land for pesticide manufacturing. Shell Oil Company has been actively involved in the clean-up.

 

In the 1980's a clean-up program was developed. The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Act (PL 102-402) in 1992 authorized the development of a National Wildlife Refuge.CountyPrey
