Ridgefield NWR - 2013/2014 Waterfowl Season Summary
During the 2013-14 season, the Refuge had 1,534 hunt visits a 13.7% decrease from last season. Duck harvest was 1,797 ducks a 44.5% decline from last season. The average number of ducks per hunter decreased from 1.8 from 1.2.
The primary duck species harvested were as follows:
Northern Shoveler - 39.1%
During the 2013-14 season, a total of 262 geese were harvested a 11.6% increase over last season.
The number of hunt visits for the 2013-14 season was partial reduced due to a U.S. Government shutdown during the first two scheduled hunt days, October 12th and 15th. In addition, the refuge enacted an emergency closure on December 7th due to snowy weather and icy road conditions. This reduction in hunt days from the scheduled 44 days to 41 days, played a role in both reduced hunt visits and harvest. Generally, harvest in the general area was low this season. It should also be noted that during the week December 10th, the weather was very cold with up to 3-inches of ice on Refuge wetlands. During this week, harvest was reduced to only 34 ducks from the entire hunt area.
