National Wildlife Refuges do not stand alone in the effort to preserve our nation's wild things. Many organizations and individuals contribute thousands of hours to our wildlife refuges and local communities by planting trees, battling invasive species, and by providing visitor outreach and education programs. Friends groups serve as advocates for our refuges and natural areas at the local, region, and national level. With these extra voices and hands at work, today's conservation projects are making a difference on our refuges and for our wildlife.

The Bulrush Brigade is now forming!

Come to the Refuge and help us eradicate Ricefield Bulrush from the wetlands that birds and other wildlife need in order to increase and maintain healthy populations. This weed takes over wetlands crowding out beneficial plants that wildlife need for food and cover.

Ricefield Bulrush is a new, and unwelcome, species that is found in only one place in the Pacific Northwest – on this Refuge. Thanks to amazing volunteer effort, we’ve kept the weed from spreading outside of the Refuge and have also greatly reduced the number of infected wetlands within the Refuge's boundary.

Open work parties are held every Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., beginning June 28th through August. Please arrive on time and wear weather appropriate clothing; long pants strongly recommended. Work parties meet at the visitor contact station at the entrance of the River 'S' Unit.

Groups are welcome and encouraged to schedule a work party on week days, if desired.

Please contact us if you have any questions.
