When is the refuge open?
Steigerwald National Wildlife Refuge Auto Tour Route: Daily -
7:00 am to 5:00 pm (Automatic Entrance Gate Hours).
The Refuge is open everyday during daylight hours. Closing times
for the automated gate system are posted on the gate at the refuge
entrance.
Periodically, the refuge may be closed for scheduled maintenance
or construction projects, or because weather conditions have created
hazardous conditions. Look for updates on this website or Contact

What can I do at the refuge?

HIke the the 2.25-mile Gibbons Creek Wildlife Trail. The 2.25-mile
Gibbons Creek Wildlife Trail connects a trailhead just east
of mile post 18 on the south side of S.R. 14 with the Columbia
River Dike Trail along the southern boundary of the refuge along
the Columbia River. Along the way, enjoy the wildlife of riparian
woodlands, fields, wetlands, creeks, and lakes. The new Gibbons
Creek Wildlife Trail has two major trail segments. The western
segment of the trail is open year-round. The eastern segment
will be closed during the winter months (October 1 to April
30) to reduce potential disurbance to wintering waterfowl.of
the Refuge is only open during the summer months
Please note that the new trail that crosses Steigerwald LakeNWR
is for wildlife observation and offers different public uses
than the adjoining Columbia River Dike Trail. The Columbia River
Dike Trail allows running, bicycling, horseback riding, and
leashed pets. While the newly opened Gibbons Creek Wildlife
Trail is reserved specifically for hiking and wildlife observation.
Therefore, pets, horses, bikes, and runners are not allowed
on the Gibbons Creek Wildlife Trail
- Visitor Facilities - Parking, information
kiosks, and restroom facilities are located off of S.R. 14 just
east of milepost 18. There are no drinking fountains available
nor picnic areas.
