About UsSteigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1987, and contains approximately 1,049 acres. The Refuge's origin is closely tied to the mitigation of impacts that resulted from the construction of a second powerhouse at the Bonneville Lock and Dam on the Columbia. This construction resulted in the loss of 1,122 acres of habitat on the Washington side of the Columbia River. Portions of Steigerwald Lake Refuge were initially acquired for fish and wildlife mitigation purposes associated with the construction project. Steigerwald Lake Refuge is collectively managed with Ridgefield, Pierce, and Franz Lake National Wildlife Refuges, as the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The Refuge Manager for the Pierce, Steigerwald Lake, and Franz Lake National Wildlife Refuges is stationed at the headquarters for the Columbia Gorge Refuges. Steigerwald Lake Refuge is one of over 540 Refuges August 11, 2008 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The 94 million acre Refuge System is the only nationwide network of Federal lands managed specifically for the conservation of fish and wildlife. Refuges serve to protect our nation's natural and cultural resources for the people of all ages and for generations to come.
