Franz Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Franz Lake NWR was established in 1990, and contains a total of 590 acres. Franz Lake's system of river streams and wetlands provides habitat for breeding, migrating, and wintering waterfowl, and other aquatic migratory birds and raptors such as American bald eagles. The refuge is a popular place for wintering tundra swans, which may be viewed from an observation platform located on a vehicle pullout area on State Route 14 - Washington's highway through the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
Franz Lake NWR is small in acreage and one of the last remaining undeveloped habitat areas open to the Columbia River. There are no public roads or walking trails leading into the Refuge. This allows Refuge staff to manage this refuge as a true wildlife sanctuary where wildlife and plants remain undisturbed by human activities.
