Wetlands at Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge provide secluded habitat for trumpeter swans, white-faced ibis, moose, and other wildlife species. | ||
Teachers are welcome to use the Refuge as an outdoor classroom for their own lessons. Refuge staff may be available to assist you during your field trip. Please contact Refuge staff for more information.
Fishing is allowed on portions of the Refuge with commonly caught species including arctic grayling, west-slope cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout. Fishing is subject to all Federal and state regulations as well as special Refuge regulations.
Hunting is permitted in designated areas of the Refuge for ducks, geese, coots, moose, elk, white-tailed deer, mule deer, and pronghorn during the state hunting seasons for these species.
Brochures, bird lists, and other publications are provided at Refuge headquarters, kiosks, and area Chambers of Commerce. Bird identification software can be viewed at the Refuge Headquarters and on our website and other links. Our website provides detailed information and links on key species such as trumpeter swans and moose.
The entire Refuge can present wildlife observation and photography opportunities when least expected. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the Refuge headquarters to learn about the types of habitat wildlife use, and then be on the lookout as you travel or hike through the Refuge. This approach provides the best means of locating and viewing the highly mobile wildlife within the Refuge. The Refuge offers many opportunities to photograph spectacular scenery, wildflowers, and wildlife. Guidelines to minimize disturbance of wildlife are available at the headquarters or through e-mail. Commercial photographers must contact Refuge staff at the headquarters to obtain a permit.
Camping is permitted in designated campgrounds only. Please contact Refuge staff for information on reservations and locations. For more information on Leave No Trace, visit the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics Web site. (http://www.lnt.org)
Refuge headquarters is open from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, except on Federal holidays.
The Refuge does not charge an entrance fee. The Refuge charges a user fee for camping ($7/day). Golden Age Passport holders and Golden Access Passport holders are charged $4/day for camping. There are no other user fees for this refuge(i.e., hunt fees, boat launch, meeting rooms rental fees, auto tour fees, guided tour fees, etc.). |
