  Recreation and Education Opportunities

Environmental Education
On a limited basis, refuge staff work with local area teachers and students to provide outdoor experiences on two nature trails located on Petit Manan Point. The refuge also serves as an outdoor laboratory for the nearby Humboldt Field Research Institute.

Hunting
Portions of Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge are open to the hunting of big game, small game, and waterfowl. All hunting activities must be conducted in accordance with state and federal regulations. Contact refuge manager at (207) 594-0600, extension 2 for more information.

Wildlife Observation
The refuge offers excellent opportunities for bird watching, nature study and photography. Foot trails wind through a variety of habitats, from spruce-fir woodlands to grasslands to freshwater and saltwater marshes to mud flats. On Petit Manan Point, the Hollingsworth Trail is a 1.5-mile loop with views of coastal bays and cobble beaches. Interpretive signs offer insight in to refuge wildlife, habitats, and management. The 4-mile Birch Point loop traverses blueberry fields, coniferous forests, and coastal salt marshes offering opportunities to view wildlife in various habitats. Commercial tour boats in Milbridge, Bar Harbor, Jonesport, and Cutler provide seabird viewing tours to Machias Seal and Petit Manan Islands.
