Environmental Education
Field trips are welcomed and encouraged. Field trips are teacher-led. Staff are available to assist in field trip planning and welcoming the group upon arrival.

Fishing
Fishing/boating is allowed in Lake Drummond year round during daylight hours when accessed via the Feeder Ditch.

Fishing/boating in Lake Drummond is allowed by permit from the Interior Ditch boat ramp April 1 to June 15.

Hunting
The refuge hosts a white-tailed deer hunt on five weekends in October and early November in both the Virginia and North Carolina portions of the refuge. A quota black bear hunt is hosted on two days in December in designated areas in the Virginia portion of the refuge.

Wildlife Observation
There are over 100 miles of trails visitors may use to explore the swamp. Lake Drummond, located at the heart of the refuge, is one of the most picturesque views in the area. Observation piers are located on the Lake at both the Washington Ditch and Interior Ditch areas. Additional boardwalk trails are located at the Washington Ditch trailhead and on West Ditch trail.

Hours
The refuge's trails are open daily from dawn to dusk. The refuge headquarters is open Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm. Only the office is closed on weekends and federal holidays.

Entrance Fees
There is no entrance fee to visit the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. A daily permit is required of all visitors desiring vehicle access to Lake Drummond through the Railroad Ditch entrance. Permits are issued from the refuge headquarters 7:30 am to 2:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Use Fees
White-tail deer hunt permit: $15.00 American black bear quota hunt permit: $50.00 Interagency Access Pass and Senior Pass holders are entitled to 1/2 price use fees.
