Lush green vegetation carpet this refuge at the mouth of the Mississippi. | ||
Specialized programs are available upon request at the refuge for schools, universities, and professional groups. These may include projects allowing interested parties to serve as volunteers on the refuge and assist with special projects.
Boating and recreational fishing are allowed on the refuge except portions of land are closed to public entry during the refuge waterfowl hunting season. No air-thrust or air-cooled propulsion engines are allowed on the refuge. The marshes and waterways offer excellent saltwater fishing for speckled trout, redfish, flounder, sheephead, blue crabs, and shrimp. The freshwater areas of the refuge offer great fishing for catfish, largemouth bass, and various sunfish.
Portions of the refuge are open to hunting ducks, geese, coots, rabbits, deer and hogs. Hunt programs allow the use of renewable resources. Permits and special regulations apply; please contact the refuge office for additional information.
The refuge has an incredible diversity and population of wildlife all year that changes with the seasons. Beautiful sunrises and sun sets abound on the refuge. A boat ride is all that is required for the opportunity to observe or photograph incredible memories that will last a lifetime!
