The Great River Refuge has been designated as a globally important bird area and provides habitat for birds such as this black-crowned night heron. | ||
On the Delair Division special group trips (school groups, scouts, etc.) are encouraged, but must be arranged in advance by contacting the refuge. Due to very limited or difficult access the The Long Island and Fox Island Divisions are not suitable for group visits.
Portions of the refuge as shown below, are open to fishing in accordance with state regulations, except that frogs and turtles may not be taken on the refuge. Long Island - Fishing is permitted year round in accordance with State seasons and regulations. Fox Island - Bank fishing is allowed along any portion of the Fox River from January 1 through October 15 in accordance with State seasons and regulations. Delair - Closed to fishing.
Portions of the refuge are open to deer, small game, furbearer and turkey hunting in accordance with state seasons and regulations, as well as special refuge regulations. Contact the refuge headquarters for a current regulations brochure. Interpretive information is provided in the visitor center and at the observation deck near the office.
The auto tour route at Clarence Cannon Refuge offers opportunities to view and photograph wildlife.
Refuge Headquarters and Visitor Center (located at Clarence Cannon Refuge) - Open 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday. Wildlife Drive/Outdoor Facilities - Only available at the refuge headquarters located at Clarence Cannon Refuge; Open daily, dawn to dusk (year-round). Great River NWR is open to public use during daylight hours only, except as noted in special refuge regulations and for the Delair Division, which is closed to the public year round.
