Continued . . . The Refuge is also home to the largest breeding colonies of Franklin's gulls and white-faced ibis in Montana. Bald eagles are commonly seen in the spring and fall, and chestnut-collared longspurs, grasshopper sparrows, and burrowing owls nest in Refuge uplands. Benton Lake NWR is recognized as a regional site by the Wetlands for Americas, formerly the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Preserve Network. The Refuge has also been identified as being significant for World Bird Conservation and is officially designated a Globally Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy.
