Refuge lands contain upland sites dominated by bearberry, arrowwood, winterberry, and chokecherry, as well as shoreline habitats including saltmarsh, beach strand habitats, salt ponds, and sand dunes. Block Island is considered an internationally significant biodiversity reserve due to the presence of endemic species, the high density of migratory songbirds, and the many rare plant and animal species which thrive here.
