The bottomland areas on the refuge are considered deep overflow swamps flooding up to 20 feet during winter and spring months. They are dominated by baldcypress, overcup oak, willow oak, sweetgum, water hickory, and green ash. Upland pine/hardwood areas are comprised of loblolly and shortleaf pines, white oak, southern red oak, sweetgum, and hickories. Commonly seen wildlife include white-tailed deer, bobcat, foxes, rabbits, grey and fox squirrels, alligators, wood ducks, green tree frogs, wild turkeys, and many species of migratory birds, including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.
